Mangawhai Lions Club has donated a new 4×3 metre storage shed to the fledgling Mangawhai Coastguard, valued at $3630.
The donation was made possible through funds raised at the Lion’s successful Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival held in March.
The shed will provide much-needed interim storage space while Mangawhai awaits full coastguard accreditation, as well as council approval to build a permanent facility.
Plans for the future include a large shed to house the boat and trailer, along with training rooms, toilets and a small canteen for crew use. The new build will also receive financial support from the Lions, as the local coastguard will be the main beneficiary of next year’s food and wine festival.
Coastguard Mangawhai president Ron Lucca thanked the Lions on behalf of all the volunteers.
“This is an amazing contribution to our efforts here,” he said. “We really appreciate the Lions’ support.”
The $30,000 raised at the festival has been spread widely in the community with other recipients including Mangawhai Surf Club, Te Whai Community’s food bank, Mangawhai Museum, North Haven Hospice, BlueLight leadership courses, Spirit of Adventure and the Mobile Skin Screening Clinic.
A community food stall for Mangawhai Heads and a picnic bench outside the Library Hall are also in the planning stages.
